Smarter Than Most Americans

An Irishman calling himself Jigsaw made the following comment on Wise Conservatism, my friend Robert's blog. I'm sharing it here because this Celt gets it like too many Americans don't.

"Hello, I am from Ireland and watched the campaign with interest! My take on President Obama is how on earth [can] a guy with no experience, no leadership history, and a guy linked to terrorists get to be president? All because he sounds good and looks like he stepped off a film set playing the president? I think it will all end in tears although I hope not for America's sake. If a guy here in Ireland had any links at all to an unrepentant IRA terrorist he would not get elected. I cannot get my head around that one!"

Jigsaw is so right. The Americans who voted for McCain can't get their heads around it, either. And, like Jig, I fear that this will all end in tears. I feel like we are Germany, 1933 only it won't take us twelve years to become Germany, 1945. God HELP America!

Using the Nazi Germany issue is great. Had thought about using that, but didn't for some reason. Guess I figured that I said enough with my post. Great post girl. Keep up the faith. Things will work out with God's help.

You lose your argument as soon as you bring the Nazis into it.

With friends like you, what need does President Obama (or America) have of enemies?

Funny, a lot of us felt like that several years ago when our government was pushing us into unnecessary wars, spying on its own citizens, using the threat of terrorism to justify power grabs, manipulating scientific research to make it fit with ideology, and playing word games to justify torture.

Still, Len's right: Once you start comparing people to Nazis, you've abandoned any chance of rational discussion. It's sure to get people angry, and implies that you don't have any real arguments, only insults. See Godwin's Law and the Reductio ad Hitlerum fallacy.

Len and Kelson, you're both thick as bricks! I wasn't comparing Obama to Hitler, I was comparing the unthinking adulation the German people heaped on Hitler in 1933 to the unthinking adulation so many Americans are now heaping on Obama, and I was reminding Americans of where such adulation can lead. Do you get it now? Sheesh!

Jerine, that song does kick ass, doesn't it?!

For the record, I did not say that you compared Obama to Hitler. What I said was "You lose your argument as soon as you bring the Nazis into it."

Who's as thick as a brick? :)

That's a fine hair you're splitting. If that is what you meant, then I can at least agree that blind faith in one's leaders is never a good thing. It wasn't a good thing over the last 8 years either.

That said, making a Nazi comparison (and citing Germany from 1933 to 1945 is implicitly a Nazi comparison) always runs the risk that your actual message will be lost beneath the emotional response it's going to trigger -- whether it's "Yes, such-and-such a group is awful" or "How dare you suggest so-and-so is so evil!"

Yeah it's terrible when your guy starts getting compared to Hitler, isn't liberals?

Just ask us!

You've only been calling Bush "Hitler" and us "Nazis" since around, oh, 1994.

Welcome to our club. To paraphrase your Messiah, you won!

BTW, Poor Republican has been renamed The Conservative Resistance. URL remains the same, unfortunately.
