Sir Winston Churchill on Islam

I found this quote on the blog Slantright; it was copied from Qando Blog. The quote is from Curchill's 1899 book, 'The River War". See what the greatest leader of the 20th century had to say about Islam, before the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Chechneya, Bosnia, Kosovo, and the other problems modern Muslims say are the cause of Muslim terrorism.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property where ever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property--either as child, wife, or concubine--must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Muslims may show spendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science--the science against which it had vainly struggled--the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."

Churchill was a hardcore alcoholic and a bad debtor leaving an unpaid bill at the Bangalore Club (India 1896) for the sum of 13 rupees. Churchill’s debt is duly recorded in one of the Club’s yellowing accounting ledgers, which is carefully displayed in a glass case in the central lounge. Great western leaders can be very cheap alcoholics...Charity begins at home!

One could say the same about today's America, the way afro american were treated after Katrina, the nunber of serial killers it has given birth to, the world capital of pornography, the number one user of cocaine on the planet, the amount of firearms related crimes, the biggest polluter on earth , the niche of thousands of delusional christian sects .....the craddle of immorallity. All this from the country which claims to be the world leading nation under God. This must be the joke of the century. And I aint laughing.

Trevor you dont seem to be a bad guy. What ever we might say and how ever right we believe we are to be we could still be very wrong. The fact of the matter is that the trouble is not with the koran, bible, Torah , vedas, puranas etc but with people and human nature.
Unlike you I believe otherwise that is America's greed and arrogance has unleashed its own destruction which has only just begun....Personally i wish all that would never happen and that you and i could be friends enjoying a nice cool beer together for the sake life, humanity, and futur generations.

Pooh Girl Churchill was right about two things we are excellent warriors and we know how to die. We may not have an armada of weapons and technologies but we have courage , the will to fight, and never scared of big bullies. And please offer to pay Churchill's debt of 13 rupees (1 us dollar = 45 Indian rupees) after all you are using his quote!

Pay Sir Winston's debt? Are you kidding? It's probably up to a gazillion dollars, what with interest and all!

I'm a secular humanist. I'm doubtful about whether religion is necessarily a good thing. If you believe in a god then answer this, how do you know what she or he is thinking? In how many wars and genocides did people claim to be carrying out "god's will" what extraordinary arrogance.

I think we'd be better off if we could believe in reason, love, justice, compassion, humility, charity and human rights. The minute we start to belive that we or others who share our beliefs have some telephone link to the divine reasoned consideration of the above values (justice, compassion etc) goes right out the window.

Justine, you appear to have adopted a particular belief about what God is and have rejected that belief. That does not disprove the existence of a God. It merely shows that you reject one possible perception of him/her/it. And all those qualities that you claim for secular humanism are also expressed in several of the world's religions. I don't think you can throw the baby out with the bath water and still maintain your argument.
